Our Wave Founding Impact Report

How do we define a survivor?

A survivor refers to anyone who has experienced sexual harm, domestic violence, or childhood abuse.

Overview

2019 was a monumental year for Our Wave as we officially launched our platform dedicated to empowering survivors of sexual harm, domestic violence, and childhood abuse. We welcomed our very first survivor stories, creating a ripple of shared experiences and validation. These early voices of courage set the foundation for an emerging community that believes in healing through understanding and support. The resounding reactions from fellow survivors and allies underscored the urgency and impact of Our Wave’s mission. Looking back, these milestones serve as a testament to the strength and resilience of survivors everywhere.

Our Community

At Our Wave, we know that healing is rarely a solitary journey, and our community strives to ensure that no survivor ever feels alone. By connecting survivors with empathetic allies, we create a safe environment where everyone can find validation and hope. This sense of shared support and solidarity plays a vital role in helping survivors reclaim their voices and foster lasting resilience.

What is a story reaction?

Story reactions are pre-written messages of support that Our Wave users can send anonymously to survivors who share their story. This allows the community to show support while protecting a safe space for survivors.

Storytelling

Sharing personal stories is a powerful act of courage and catharsis. On the Our Wave platform, survivors can safely open up about their experiences, knowing they will be met with compassion and understanding. These stories not only help individuals process trauma but also demonstrate how deeply connected and universal the healing journey can be.

References & Considerations

This report encompasses data collected from January 1, 2019 to January 1, 2020.

All stories and messages written by survivors are used with the survivors' permission to publish.

We made significant changes to our metrics reporting processes from 2019 to 2022. Because of these changes, some metrics may contain inaccuracies when compared to later years.

1 Comparison to the same metric during the previous annual report period.

2 Aggregated metrics from the founding of Our Wave in 2019 to the end of 2019.

3 Community members are defined by unique IP addresses that visit our Community platform over a given period of time. We periodically clean up our metrics to remove IPs from known scrapers, crawlers, and bots.

4 Demographic and tag data from stories submitted directly to the core Our Wave storytelling platform (community.ourwave.org)
