During Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April 2025, ABC 11 News in Raleigh welcomed Our Wave co-founder and CTO Brendan Michaelsen to its morning show. The segment opened with Governor Josh Stein's new sexual assault cold case unit, then turned to how Our Wave builds safe, private spaces where survivors can heal.

An Anonymous Home for Survivor Stories

Brendan explained that Our Wave began in 2018, as the #MeToo movement brought thousands of stories into public view. Many survivors still didn't feel safe sharing openly, so the team built an anonymous online platform for them. He described sharing one's story as a vital step on the path to healing. By April 2025, he said, Our Wave had gathered stories from all 50 states and 67 countries.

Beyond stories, Brendan said, trauma-informed experts answer survivors' questions, and community members send one another messages of hope. The team also refers survivors to in-person support services.

Building a Culture of Respect and Safety

Asked how schools, workplaces, and families can create safer spaces, Brendan recommended a confidential, easy way for people to raise questions or concerns. Teams can then address those concerns together in honest, anonymous conversations. He said this approach helps survivors feel their boundaries are respected without having to go public. "It really takes all of us to stand up to support these survivors," he told ABC 11.

Ways to Get Involved

Brendan invited survivors, allies, and supporters to join the Our Wave community at ourwave.org. He also encouraged viewers to volunteer, noting that the organization relies on volunteers from across the country.
